Greenenj: A Captivating Art Installation Symbolizing Freedom and Renewable Energy

An Innovative Design by Dmitry Pogorelov

The installation represents the image of an entity escaping from a substance, such as a flying whale, symbolizing freedom. The heart of the entity is a glowing iridescent pulsating sphere, representing the unity of people in feelings and life. Surrounding the heart are technologies that sustain its life, including solar panels, wind generators, and batteries.

Traditional sources of energy are often irresponsible to nature and our connection with it. However, the Greenenj art installation reveals the potential for a harmonious and free coexistence of humans and nature through the careful integration of renewable energy. By preserving the diversity and purity of nature, which inspires freedom, we maintain our ability to feel. This ability to experience emotions is something that unites all people on our planet, and it is beautifully reflected in the installation's imagery.

The structure of the installation is made of MDF, while the sphere is crafted from acrylic milk glass using vacuum forming technology. The sphere is divided into two parts for easy installation of the internal LED structure. LED strips beneath the large disk indicate the power transmission from miniature solar panels and wind generators to batteries. The lighting has a programmed work script, and a display on the small disk showcases the presented technologies.

With dimensions of 2000 x 2600 x 1480 mm (without miniature, 1700 mm with), the installation weighs 295 kg, with the bulk concentrated in the base for stability. It consumes 220 V and 600 W of electric energy. The installation consists of five main parts, making transportation and assembly at exhibitions convenient. It is packaged in a soft fabric to protect against bumps and scratches.

Operating the installation is simple, with an on/off button located under the small disk. The highlighting and speed of the wind generator fan rotation are automatically controlled according to a prescribed scenario. The sphere pulsates intensively when wind generators work quickly, symbolizing life. The display operates in standalone mode.

The Greenenj project began in June and was completed in December 2017 in Moscow. It was exhibited in RIA News and Ecotech in December 2017. The design research and development of the installation were based on the designer's method, which involved studying human psychology and the semiotics of constructing meanings in design products. This approach helped create a cohesive story within the art installation, with colors, shapes, and textures interacting to recreate the original idea.

The Greenenj art installation faced several challenges during its production. The main focus was on satisfying spiritual needs rather than just physiological electricity needs or security concerns. Overcoming technical obstacles, such as electrostatic noises generated by the large number of LEDs, required the implementation of ferrite rings on key electronic nodes.

The Greenenj art installation beautifully reflects the correlation between freedom, life, and feelings with renewable energy. Through the image of a flying entity symbolizing freedom, Dmitry Pogorelov showcases the freedom of nature and the emotions it evokes. By preserving nature, we preserve our ability to feel, which unites all people on Earth. The brighter and more intense the pulsation and color changes of the sphere, the faster the wind generators work, symbolizing the life of the entity and conveying the image of mankind.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Greenenj art installation is respected for its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings while contributing to a better world.
